Frequently Asked Questions

  • Answers to the most (FAQ) Frequently Asked Questions related to the Tambo Jungle Lodge

    BEFORE YOU GO.-
I don`t have flights how can I organise them?
Flights are not included in the tour purely as many people do organise them in connection with international flight tickets but if you do not have domestic flights and would like a quote please contact Soledad and advise of your interest so she can confirm date availability immediately and send you quote for E tickets.

Do I need vaccinations or Malarial tablets?

    VACCINATION INFORMATION
Though we have not heard of anyone contracting yellow fever anywhere in Peru in many years, we nevertheless recommend a yellow fever vaccination for trips to the rainforest. This vaccination is required or recommended for most rainforest areas around the world. The vaccination, which is valid for 10 years, is only really effective starting 10 days after it is administered – please bring your certificate.
Malaria is present but extremely rare. If you wish to take medical precautions against malaria consult your physician or a specialist in tropical medicine but very few people believe this is necessary. Malaria is not a great risk as long as you use clothing that covers your body well and insect repellent at all times, especially late afternoon early evening.
Also Mosquito nets are provided in your rooms and you are encouraged to use them each night. They are hung above your beds and you just untie them and secure around your matress when resting or sleeping on your bed.

Is it worth going in Wet Season ?
There is possiblity of rain and wet weather at any time of the year but from Jan to March the area is affected more by the general rainy season ... that is extra water running off mountains and raising river levels for longer periods of time.
Rainfall even in June can raise a river 1- 2 meters but then drop down again by the next day
But in rainy season this could stay raised for a month and so programes such as Monkey Island will be affected generally in Feb March due to parts of the Island being flooded.
You will definitely need to use the wellington boots provided by the lodge in wet season as some parts of the trails may have you walking in mud up to your knees.
You generally see less wildlife in the rain but you should never expect to see too much wildlife anyway as the jungle is very dense...... the one good thing is while it is raining ...mosquitoes don`t fly!

Is there a chance that my tour will be canceled?
There is lttle chance of a total cancellation of the tour unless due to natural disaster. Due to extreme weather circumstances there may be alternative routes taken or programs adapted rather than totally cancelled. but often Monkey Island is flooded in Feb,March so more difficult to see wildlife and seemingly more mosquitoes.

Can I go fishing for Pirana?
This is possible by exchanging time from one of the optional afternoon walks to go to Gamitana river around 3.30pm. If the entire group would like to go then the guide will accompany them. If only a couple of people want to fish and the rest of the group want to do a walk then the guide will need to accompany the group on their walk but the motor boat driver will be able to take the others to Gamitana creek and assist you to fish for Pirana or anything else you happen to snag ..there are a few local varieties of small fish and catfish! The motor boat driver won`t be able to speak very good English but can demonstrate. Fishing is becoming quite popular so you will find that often the groups want to fish and those who don`t prefer to just rest in the afternoon around the lodge so the guide can go with you. Please ensure you make the guide aware of this desire to go fishing when you first travel down to the lodge so it can be explained as an option to others.
