 PORTERS.

So we had a Christmas Party to try to thank as many families as possible with a Day of Fun.

Click to enlargeOne of the Projects that came out of last years Christmas Party was to support the Porters community at Chacan where the 2004 celebration was held.

We pledged to chanel educational supplies into this community over 2005 /2006 and money to assist them to improve one of their Kindergarten areas.

The people of this community showed a great desire to improve the future for their children and they demonstrated it with hard work and initiative which is why they were chosen to be particularly supported this year.  The Plan is to enclose an outside playground with a bathroom and kitchen to meet the hygiene and nutritional needs of their children.

Thankfully, Jonathan Bryan, from DISCOVER ADVENTURE, a UK agency who bring many large Charity groups to trek the Inca Trail with us each year, asked how his company and the charity groups could assist some of the Porters` Families.

They have already sent $700 for the Kindergarten playground construction and as you can see the 2 groups who we have already taken out to the project have brought with them more supplies and gifts than the community ever dreamt of!

There are however more than 500 young children in Chacan so they are looking forward to the continued commitment and kindness of Jon, DISCOVER ADVENTURE and the Charity Groups.

Not only have the gifts been greatly appreciated by the children, teachers and Parents but they have so enjoyed the generous human spirit and Hope that these people from the Charities have left with them.

All of the manual labour has been performed by the Parents themselves who were surpised to uncover a tomb complete with a

Mummy and Incan Ceramics while removing a huge boulder in their work to clear the land.

We and the entire community of Chacan which to thank  DISCOVER ADVENTURE who have generously offered to cover the costs of the materials to complete this project over 2006.

If you are part of a group who would like to sponsor a project such as this or even an individual,  there are so many more communities and 2006 is directed at some of the porters communities in the mountains behind Pisac.

Earthquake Victims Relief project!

The children of the SAS travel Wawa wasi have been making small cards to raise money for a number of blankets we sent on their behalf for relief for the Earthquake Victims Relief project!

Every Saturday we run a wawa wasi which is simply a daycentre for small children of single working mums.  It has grown into an activity group for older kids as well as they are the older brothers and sisters who care for the littlies while their mums work.

We now make a time where the older kids do activities with me while the younger kids are looked after by 2 mums and it is amazing the discussions we have. Sometimes we will have a story and then do an activity arising out of it but when the earthquake hit that was on everyones minds. These gorgeous kids were saying and quite seriously "if only we had some money we would give it to the little children who are cold and sleeping in the streets, ..many who are orphans now".

So I said we can raise money for blankets for them..so we started making simple cards that have a cute sticker on the front and inside a variety of greetings that they paste inside the card

( Happy Birthday!    /  Get Well Soon    / Thankyou   and   Thinking of You!)

They were so excited that they "churned" out over 100 already and the activity was as much of importance in giving them self esteem and a feeling that they could do something for someone else as much as helping those in Ica. I always feel sad when people feel helplessness and I think it affects a lot of children here and has influence on how they grow into adults.

On the back they paste a note that says.

100% of the money
from the purchase of these cards
made by the Peruvian children of the
SAS travel Wawa Wasi in Cusco
buys blankets for their fellow Peruvians,
Vicitims of the Aug 2007  Earthquake

They are so proud of their work in this!  So if any of you  would like to buy some or visit the Wawa wasi that we run from Marqueses that would be a treat!

The cards are sold by donation!  As you can see many of them made by the 3 and 4 years olds will be a story in itself when you give their birthday card to one of your friends.  Maybe 1sol for a nice card or 3 for a 1 sol 50 centavos when one of them is one by the 3 year olds!!.   This works out as 3 cards for 50 cents US and so what a bargain but the thing is that $10 pays for one of the 30 blankets sent on their behalf so once they sell 20 packets of 3 they have paid for a blanket and will be thrilled!

Only takes 20 toursits x 50cents US each and you have protected a Child from the cold in Ica and helped some young kids in Cusco know they are able to help others . (That sort of power over helplessness is priceless!)

We so very much appreciate any of your help in this effort.

Thankyou on behalf of the wawa wasi and the families of Ica, Pisco and other affected areas!
