Overview

(Sunday and thursday are the most recommended day for enjoying Sacred Valley´s beautiful town, market and arqueological site of Pisac and so you would want to consider your 2 day trek for a Monday)
This has become an incredibly popular option and defintiely worth booking as it makes excellent use of your time and money.

SAS Travel Peru

Is it for me?

This all makes even better sense when you realise that the group leaving from Cusco on the day of the trek, depart at 4am but you can sleep in and only need to be ready just before 6am to be transfered to the train.

SAS Travel Peru

Difficulty

This itinerary is rated moderate and should be undertaken by people who are fairly fit and take regular exercise. However you do not need to consider this as a high altitude trek as it is lower than Cusco

Program Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco Sacred Valley Pisac Urubamba Ollantaytambo

At 8.20am meet at SAS Travel office or transfer from your hotel at earlier time if coordinated. In a tourist bus, we travel from Cusco past Saqsaywaman and Tambomachay, over the mountains toward the Sacred Valley. We descend 1500 feet to the valley floor of the sacred Urubamba river and the village of Pisac where we will visit a traditional market and you can buy some local souveniers. We then drive up to explore the extensive ruins of Pisac with stunning views over the valley. On the guided walk into the Citadel of Pisac you can observe temples, residences, altars, channels, carvings, tunnels/caves and the famous Intihuatana “The hitching post of the Sun",

For those who would prefer to spend more time in the market instead of visiting the ruins, advise your guide so he can organise a time and place to pick you up when returning through the market.
-We continue on to Urubamba where we stop for you to buy lunch. A further 30 mins drive takes us to Ollantaytambo surrounded by the sacred mountains, where we will again discover the magnificence of the Incan constructions, the amazing temple of the Sun, enormous blocks of rock perfectly carved and polished, stone water fountains, stairs, terraces and the beauty of the local people in their traditional dress, all surrounded by the sacred mountains and Valley of Patacancha and Willoq.
At approximately 4pm the sacred valley tour group return to Cusco but the people who are doing the Sacred Valley Combo tour will be taken to the Hotel in Ollantaytambo ( Apu lodge or Ollantaytambo lodge or similar Hotel) with private bathroom.
Settle in and then enjoy sunset in the valley, have a dinner in the plaza. (we highly recommend Panaka Grill and Hearts Cafe) and relax before the start of your trek the next day.

Hotel Apu Lodge

Day 2: OLLANTAYTAMBO- KM 104 CHACHABAMBA- WIÑAY-WAYNA- MACHUPICCHU-AGUAS CALIENTES.

We`ll pick you up from your Hotel just before 6:00 am to transfer you to the Train Station in Ollantaytambo then we`ll board a Tourist Expedition Train with reserved seats for 1 hour and 45 minutes to the kilometer 104 start of the hike. (This is the best train service time and itinerary to start the hike by 08:00 am and have plenty of time to enjoy this fantastic trek) so please sleep early the night before) As soon as we arrive to this point we will cross a bridge to the check out point and show your passports then we will start a soft walk into the other side of the Vilcanota river the trail heads off to the right towards the ruins of Chachabamba. After a visit in Chachabamba, we`ll continue the trail heads south and begin climbing the mountain, before entering the cloud forest. Then the trail leaves the forest and goes west while continuing the uphill hike in open grassland. After hiking in the sun for about three hours, the trail descends into a shaded forest. This is where trekkers can enjoy a beautiful waterfall. After leaving the waterfall and forest, trekkers will arrive at the lower part of the incredible ruins of Wiñaywayna. It is recommended that you start the trek with at least 2 litres of water.

After lunch in Wiñaywayna we continue through a cloud forest full of bromelias, orchids and fern trees. You will walk the last part of the original trail with amazing features stone steps and tambos “resting places” and climb the 60 steps before arriving to the Inti Punku or "Sun`s Gate". From this point you will be able to contemplate and observe this marvelous place, last 45 minutes to be on front of this wonder, where you can feel an inner peace. Spend a short time for pictures and views, with luck you can observe a magnificent sunset, then we prepare our mind for the next early morning, time to take a bus for 30 minutes to Aguas Calientes town. Hot springs pools are optional (bring your bathing suit and 10 soles) or just free time to chill out at this small village.
Accommodation in private rooms, Hotel Viajeros or similar level accommodation.
This is all considered a low altitude hike, but you would want to be fit. Dinner included. At dinner time your guide will inform about plans and arrengements for the next big day!!

  • Will I be able to climb Huayna Picchu mountain after my tour...
  • If you are wanting to include an ascent of Huayna Picchu in your visit to Machu Picchu, beware that there are new regulations since July 2011 and permits have to be bought in advance. The cost to have a Machu Picchu entrance that includes the permits to climb Huayna Picchu is $55 but unfortunately at this moment the INC does not have separate Huayna Picchu permit to combine with the $100 Inca trail permit which already includes the Machu Picchu entrance. We have asked the INC to consider providing the opportunity for Inca trail trekkers to only pay for the separate Huayna Picchu permit which is really only about $10 but they have not yet provided for this so if you want to guarantee a permit to climb Huayna Picchu you need to purchase this off the INC site directly. The directions for this are given in Additional Options section below.
  • § For ISIC card holders ... if you want this permit, you must email us indicating this in writing and ensuring we have a clear scan of your ISIC card as you cannot purchase a student price entrance off the INC website so we will do this for you..but you must indicate in writing that that you will pay the extra $35 for us to buy the student permit in advance.
  • § There is a limit of only 400 permits for climbing Huayna Picchu and only 200 people are permitted to enter for each of the 2 sessions scheduled for 7am and 10 am. The guide will organise the tour of Machu Picchu around peoples climb of Huayna Picchu depending on how many in the group have permits. Please note your entrance to Machu Picchu and permit for Huayna Picchu are with your name and passport details so are non transferable and non refundable.
  • § …to purchase a Huayna Picchu permit with the 2D/1N Inca trail means you must purchase Huayna Picchu permit for the same day that you already have entrance to Machu Picchu
  • § . ie Inca Trail 2D/1N Short Trek start 1 Nov then you must purchase the Huayna Picchu permit for day 2 ..Which is 2 Nov
  • § We are outlining the steps below but if you need any help just skype sas.travel and I will walk you through it.
  • § Firstly enter this link for the INC website http://www.machupicchu.gob.pe/
  • § Please have a visa card ready for the purchase.
  • § If not already in English change to English with the British flag symbol! Not everything will be in English but most of it!!!
  • § 1. In the upper left hand area click on lugar a visitor and choose Machu Picchu
  • § 2. Below this click on Seleccione la routa and choose MAPI-Huayna we suggest 2 G 10.00-11.00am time slot so you can do tours first while no people in Machu Picchu and then when the crowds come …escape to Huayna Picchu
  • § 3. Now below this there is a calendar and you must use the right arrow to choose the month you want. And then the day of the month that you will climb Huayna Picchu.
  • 4. Be very careful selecting your date. For example if you are starting this tour on the 9th of Nov your 2D/1N Inca trail will start onthe 10th of Nov and so the date for visiting Huayna Picchu is the 11 Nov.
  • § 5. When you choose your date it will show availability=Disponibilidad . If it is currently showing 200 this means no one has yet purchased any permits then there is no hurry!
  • § 6. As you are not Peruvian you fill in the upper box entitled Foreign Category and you click on quantity so as to indicate how many people.
  • § 7. Example Indicate 2 and then click on Step 2 at the bottom of the page
  • § 8. You then fill in your first name and last name as indicated in your passport, sex M or F and choose your country( as per your passport)and age and type in your passport number
  • § 9. Check the information you have typed in for each of you and then click on Step 3
  • § 10. It will show the date and your details and 300 soles which is about $110 to cover 2 permits
  • § 11. Make sure you type in your email address where it says Address
  • § 12. Leer terminos y condiciones this means Read Terms and Conditions but they only seem to show it in Spanish so I am trying to get an English version but it is pretty much non refundable non transferable!!
  • § And you have to check acepto los condiciones to continue !
  • § 13. Click on Reserve Generating and it will display your permit with details and again make sure the date is correct etc.
  • § 14. Note your “code book” ie a multi digit lettered booking code ex. 230811M0286M1M11
  • § 15. Go to upper menu and click on PAGOS and copy and paste your code into the box that says code reservation and then click on PAY.
  • § 16. A box will pop up title DRC-C BOLETO ELECTRONICO if the details are correct then click enviar and have a Visa card ready. Your credit card needs to be affiliated with “Verified by Visa”
  • If you have any queries just let me know and we will try to help you through the process.
  • skype: sas.travel
  • Addtional options for trek
  • Hot Springs in Aguas Calientes 10 soles ( US$3.50)
  • Extra night in Aguas Calientes $20 per person (on double basis)
  • Single Supplement for single/solo travelers US$ 20 per room
