This trek takes us into the Lares region of the Peruvian Andes, passing green valleys, tranquil mountain lakes and high passes, with breathtaking views of snow-capped Andean peaks rising to just under 6,000 meters. Our route takes us through many small village communities that offer a rare & fascinating insight into traditional Andean life. Finally we make our way by train to Aguas Calientes and continue on to Machu-Picchu, the legendary Lost City of the Incas. We have plenty of time to explore this renowned and fascinating site, climb to Huayna Picchuand walk to Sun-Gate as well if you like.

Is it for me?

If you are interested in the Inca Trail for any Dates before Dec 2011 then you have already missed out on permits. This may at first seem totally devastating but there are some Alternative treks to Machu Picchu such as this which do not require the same permits and so are available. This is not just a perfect alternative if you miss out on Inca trail permits but many people choose this trek instead of Inca trail for its cultural aspect of visiting remote andean villages on and off the beaten track style trek. Where the inca trail has become a bit too popular Lares still has moments when you are the only people to be gazing over the stunning emerald lake from a high mountain pass! There will most probably be some alpacas accompanying you. There are less Inca arquelogical sites along the trail itself until you get to Machu Pîcchu but if you like awesome scenery and alpacas then this is for you!
Also this is a great trek if you have already visited Machu Picchu and just want to do another high altitude 3 day trek as you can return to Cusco from Yanahuarra instead of going on to Machu Picchu and this cuts the cost of course as well!

Difficulty: especially in the first part of the trek you will most likely feel difficulty breathing in altitude, will have to stop frequently to regain your breath and will find you have very little energy and will need to walk far slower than usual. It is very common to feel extremely short of breath while ascending and this is always a shock in the beginning of the Lares trek where it is a steady continuous climb to the first pass. This is to be expected and every one finds this very difficult and state of mind is very important at this point..but wel rewarded once you reach the top of the first pass!
..we walk in the footsteps of the local people, farmers, arieros and their mules along rocky trails. My feet still hurt!

Last Minute Information

  • If you are wanting to include an ascent of Huayna Picchu in your visit to Machu Picchu beware that there are new regulations and permits have to be bought in advance. The cost to have a Machu Picchu entrance that includes the permits to climb Huayna Picchu is $10 extra and you need to indicate this in your web reservation at the time of booking.

    There is a limit of only 400 permits for climbing Huayna Picchu and only 200 people are permitted to enter for each of the 2 sessions scheduled for 7am and 10 am. The guide will organise the tour of Machu Picchu around peoples climb of Huayna Picchu depending on how many in the group have permits. Please note your entrance to Machu Picchu and permit for Huayna Picchu are with your name and passport details so are non transferable and non refundable.
    Last minute bookings of this trek will possibly miss out on permits in high season so please book and pay in advance.


    The road works are still continuing and so we have to depart Cusco around 4am so we are still picking you people from hotels between 3.30 and 4am. this appears to be necessary until the end of Aug 2011 possibly longer!. Please make sure you are ready for your Hotel transfer time which will be confirmed at the briefing the night before as the road closures later on mean we must not be delayed in getting through to the trail head.

Program Itinerary

Day 1: Day 1: Cusco - Quishuarani (Lares) - Cuncani - Yanacocha 3800 masl

Our private bus leaves Cusco at 04.30 sharp for a scenic drive through the Sacred Valley, passing through Pisac and stopping for a brief toilet break and the chance to buy any last minute snacks, water, etc in Calca, one of the towns in the valley. Departing Calca around 06:45 we head off for the scenic drive to Quishuarani (3,700m /12,150 ft) which is the starting point for the trek. Along the way you will be able to observe small Andean communities, spectacular mountain landscapes, herds of llamas and alpacas plus Campesinos (people of the local villages) in colorful costumes as is traditional with all villages around Lares major district. A box breakfast will be served en route around 9am with arrival to Quishuarani before 10am, where we will meet our arriero horses, handlers and trek staff. We commence our beautiful trek through the Andes with a gentle climb from 3700m to 4200 masl where we will arrive at the lagoon named Queuña Cocha and can observe Mount Sawasiray (5400m) and Colque Cruz (5600m). There is then a short, steeper climb to our first pass, Hualcacasa (4400m) where Mount Veronica (5700m, a sacred Apu mountain in this Valley) can often be observed in the high mountains, after which we descend for 30 minutes to reach our lunch destination beside the picturesque 'seven lagunas'. Following lunch we descend for a further 30 minutes through the community of Cuncani, then gradually ascend beautiful hillsides for 2 hours to reach our second pass, Qolqecasa (4200m). 30 minutes descent from here past lagunas and waterfalls till we arrive at Yanacocha, our campsite for the night around 4.30pm.

Day 2: Yanacocha - Wakawasi - Mantanay 3900 masl

After our 6.30am breakfast we leave Yanacocha and will gradually descend for approx 2 hours until Chaqchapata (3950m). We will be able to observe potato crops, flocks of llamas and alpacas developed in this part of the Andes (part of the cameloid family) and the local communities of people who continue living in houses made of stones. Along the slope we can observe the campesinos of Chaqchapata and 30 minutes further on of Wakawasi. We then ascend for approximately 1 and a half hours to our lunch destination on the 'spongy grass' by a glacial stream, Champacocha. After our lunch rest we ascend for approximately an hour to reach the highest point of our trek, the passage of Auroracasa (4600m) where we will observe the lagoon Auroracocha. >From Auroracasa we will descend to walk near two lagoons & traverse one more pass to enter the valley of Queuñas. We will notice a wide change in scenery before arriving at our beautiful campsite in Mantanay (3900m) after approx 2 hours.

Day 3: Mantanay 3900m to Yanahuara 2700 masl

After breakfast we start our walk at 7:30 am with a much easier day ahead as we descend to lower altitude & enjoy amazing views of part of Moray Maras and Salineras, mountains and the queuñas bush valley. You will notice the sudden change of weather and environment & observe local campesinos farming different crops of corn, potatoes and local vegetables to sell later in villages in the Sacred Valley. This walk will take approx 4 hours to reach the picturesque village of Yanahuara where we enjoy the last lunch in our trek and farewell our staff, arrieros horses, handlers, cooks and assistants. A private bus will then take us for the 30 minute ride to Ollantaytambo train station where we will board the train for the 2 hour trip with our tour guide to Machupicchu town, Aguas Calientes.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes 2100 masl – Machupicchu 2400 masl – Ollantaytambo – Cusco 3400 masl.

Early breakfast (05.00am) before taking the 5.30am bus directly to Machupicchu arriving around 06.00am. **Optional for those still able/wanting to walk!: leave 04.30am and walk up to Machupicchu arriving approx 06.00am but only if you really want to hike in the dark so have torches but remember you do not get into Machu Picchu earlier than people who take the bus as they also arrive around 6am to the entrance with the guide.

In Machupicchu it is still a 15 minute walk from the drop-off point to the famous views from the South Zone of the farming terraces at the end of the Inca trail. Enjoy the early tour of Machupicchu with your guide who will unfold the mysteries of this magical site, showing you the very best of it! Your guide will spend about 2 hours relating to you interesting and amazing stories, explaining temples and special sectors. Your tour of Machupicchu should finish between 10 and 10:30am then you have free time to take your photos before the 10:30 crowds arrive. You will also have the opportunity to climb Huayna Picchu (minimum 90 mins - please arrange with your tour guide to get a pass for it!!), Inca bridge or Sun´s gate. We provide a Buffet lunch in Aguas Calientes after the walk down from Machupicchu. If you prefer a box lunch to have in Machupicchu you must sign up for it in the office before your trek.

  • HINTS FOR A FANTASTIC HIKE.-
  • ALTITUDE SICKNESS.-
  • - It is possible you will feel the effects of altitude on arriving in Cusco, (3,400m/ 11,152ft)) especially if you fly from sea level, eg LIMA.
  • - It is best to wait at least two days before setting out on the trail, don¨t drink alcohol, smoke or take sedatives.
  • - Drink lots of water and coca tea. Drink at least two litres per day, especially on the second day pass.
  • - In high altitude you breath rapidly and shallow causing you to
  • dehydrate more quickly.
  • - Drink extra water or coca tea to avoid this as coffee also tends to
  • cause dehydration.
  • - Always purify water you take from the trail waterfalls and streams.
  • - We provide drinkable boiled water at the campsites and refill your bottles
  • - You can purchase purification tablets (eg Micropur) from any pharmacy.
  • - You must leave micropur tablets in the water for at least 90 mins
  • before drinking. Iodine only 20 mins.
  • - If you have any medical conditions, allergies or special food requirements etc. Please write this clearly in the registration book.
  • WATER.-We suggest you take a 1.5 or 2. litres bottle of water on the first day and then you can refill this on the trek. We boil water each night which is available after breakfast each morning for your water bottles. We still suggest you take water purification tablets or filters for any unboiled water you take directly from streams or Waterfalls etc. You can buy bottle water from the 3rd afternoon in Ollantaytambo and onwards.
  • TEMPERATURES.- during the day...If you are walking in the sun it is very hot and feels like 26 degrees celcius, but when you walk through the forest or in the shadow of a mountain it can feel like 14 degrees almost immediately. At night it could get to -5 degrees celcius if you are really unlucky but more likely just freezing ! Main hint for dealing with the temperatures is to try and keep your body temp as regular as possible by using layering of clothes so when you feel cool put on an extra layer before you get cold and if you start to feel warm take off a layer before you perspire which will leave you with a chill later if you don´t take care..
  • The weather from Dec through to early March is usually the wettest on the trail.
  • Somedays it may be drizzly all day or you may have a burst of rain and clear skies for the rest of the day or it could be wet off and on all day. You need good rain gear for walking as well as something to protect your pack. We have dining tents for all meals so you are protected at this time.
  • TIPPING for your STAFF.-
  • As for all American countries, tipping is normal and it is apart of the experience. Generally groups prepare a collective tip at lunch on the last trekking day which is shared out between the cook,assistant, horsehelders,

If you are at any hotel in San Blas area, please wait for us in front of the Church of San Blas for your transfer at 5.40 am. If you are at Hotel Niños 1 on Calle Meloc or Hotel Niños 2 in Calle Fierro, please wait for your bus at 6:10 am.   • Where can I store my luggage while I am trekking?
  • On the trek/tour, you should only bring with you the things you really want/need and leave the rest of your things with us. SAS Travel offers Free luggage storage for all of our customers. If you have luggage that you wish to leave with us in Cusco then bring it to the meeting point on the morning of the departure. A SAS Travel Rep will take your things to be stored in the Hotel Marqueses (Calle Garcilaso 265- Tèl: 257819), which is right next door to our main SAS Travel office.

  • YES, so that you can take part in options such as the natural hot springs in Aguas Calientes (10 soles), Bus ticket down from Machupicchu to Aguas Calientes US$7 pp if you don`t want to walk the trail. tips for your trekking staff, souvenirs, snacks in Machupicchu, bottled water, drinks, etc.
  • You should take at least 300 soles as emergency money that hopefully you will return to Cusco with!
  • Do the guides speak English?
  • SAS Travel has high standards for our guides. All of our top guides must be educated in the field of tourism, first aid assistance and completely fluent in English. Our guides are also one of the most popular aspects of our tours some of them being historians and archaeologists and all demonstrate a great passion for their culture and heritage.
  • How many people will be in my group?
  • We require 6 person minimum for our treks, indicated dates on web are open groups in which you are welcome to join, sometimes we have groups of 8 passengers. Average 8-12 and maximum 19 with 2 tour guides.
  • During low season the groups are more likely to small and during high season the groups will likely be full.
  • When a group goes over max, we will breakit into 2 groups who may travel together but have separate guides, cooks etc.
  • Should I hire an extra porter?
  • Unless you have hired an extra porter you will need to carry your own back pack, sleeping bag and water for the day. 75% of our travellers hire the extra porter/mule and it is highly recommended for the altitude. If you would like to have a porter carry your things, one can be hired for US $45 for every 9kg. SAS Travel provide a duffle bag at the briefing the night before your hike. You should bring only what you absolutely need/want on the trek, and store the rest of your belongings in Cusco (see the information on our Free Luggage Storage).
  • Even if you do hire a porter you will still need a day pack with you so that you can carry such items as your camera, water bottle, snacks ( energy bars, dried fruits, nuts, sweets, remember glucose is a big help and imperative in the hights), sunscreen, sun-glasses, a fleece or something warm and a poncho (during the rainy season or cloudy days) ie anything you will need before lunch as the porters do not walk alongside you. You will usually meet up with your bag at lunch and then it will be waiting for you in your tent at the campsite.
  • It is best to put everything up to 18 kgs in one duffle bag if you are a couple or 2 for the porter so that you don’t have 2 large backpacks in your tent. We can provide you with a duffel bag to use. At the final lunch with the trek crew on the 4th day, staff will collect up the mats and sleeping bags and take them back to Cusco as you sleep in a bed with bedding tonight.
  • B. ON THE TREK.-
  • **I am not really an experienced trekker?. What if I can’t keep up?
  • How difficult is the Lares Trail?**
  • Only in extremely rare circumstances does a passenger need to come back early if they have acclimatised. You just need to remember that you are able to go at a speed that is comfortable for you. Take your time, pace yourself, and enjoy. The Lares Trail is considered a moderate hike, not a technical hike but high altitude will affect some individuals. We do carry oxygen and we recommend using a trekking pole.
  • Are Trekking poles really necessary?
  • we DO recommend the use of Trekking poles, especially for those passengers with known knee problems. There are multiple times during the trek that a Trekking poles is handy, be it ascending a mountain or walking along the rough trails.
  • Will I see many local villages
  • Lares is the better trek to do to see quaint local villages that have maintained a very typical andean rustic life style and traditional weaving skills. You will see small towns along the apporach to this trek and a couple of times during this but they have a mistizo feel rather than tiny andean villages.

  • What if I am unable to finish the trail?
  • In the scenario that you are unable to finish the trek due health issues.
  • SAS Travel will do everything in its power to get you to the nearest civilization and get help or transportation to help. If the issue is respiratory or due to altitude, we do carry at least one tank of oxygen on trek that you will have access to. In extreme cases, a helicopter pick up can be arranged at your own expense.(Travel Insurance required) There are no refunds in the situation that you are unable to finish though. Generally those who have to be assisted off the trail but recover quickly are taken to Ollantaytambo where they rest and spend the night and then can join the group again on the 3rd afternoon for by train to Aguas Calientes ( cost incurred by trekker ) and visit Machu Picchu according to original plan.
  • What if I become ill before the trail or am suffering severe altitude on the day of departure?
  • We do not recommend that any one starts this trek if not in good health. If you miss the trek part while gaining strength in Cusco we can assist you with discounted accomodation within your cancellation costs and we can still take you to meet the group on the 4th day so you can continue the tour from here.
  • That way you are still able to use the Machu Picchu entrance join your group for a tour and return train ticket at least
  • **Can SAS Travel accommodate my dietary needs?
  • What kind of food will there be?**
  • Not to worry, SAS Travel is able to accommodate many types of dietary needs upon request at the time of booking. If you are a vegetarian, or cannot eat gluten or have allergies to certain foods, it will not be a problem. The meals of our chefs are one of the most popular parts of our tours too, and the quality will not be reduced when accommodating your dietary needs. The meals are served buffet style and you are able to choose what you would like to eat. Your guides will let you know what time the meals will be served.
  • Our cooks prepare excellent high-energy meals appropriate for a trek of this nature. The menu usually includes quinua, cereals and vegetable soups, Beaf Lomo Saltado with rice, chicken cacerole, fresh fruit and vegetables and a variety of oatmeal, eggs and other breakfast foods as scramble egg, quinua panqueques.
  • Will I need to bring water?
  • We recommend that you purchase a 1.5 – 2 litre bottle of water to take with you on the first day. Every night during the trek, we will boil water so you can refill the same bottle every morning before setting out. If you are planning to drink from any streams or waterfalls, we strongly suggest you bring water purification tablets or filters.
  • Also, you will be able to buy water along the way on Day 1, for the first few hours of Day 2, then again on the afternoon of Day4, and of course at Machu Picchu.
  • Are there bathrooms along the way?
  • Along the trail there are several sites with toilets. Bring a roll of toilet paper. As far as other trash goes, please carry your own trash to each campsite where the porters will pack it up and take it out. Leave no trace! Please do not litter.
  • Is it OK to bring toddlers on the trail?
  • It is not recommended for children under the age of 13 . If you are thinking of bringing any children with you, it is recommended that you do a private tour with us instead of going on a group service departure. That way, you can get the extra attention that you will require from the guide. It should be remembered that it is likely you will have a difficult time as it is, so if you have never done higher altitude trekking with your child before, you’ll want to carefully consider your enjoyment and the enjoyment of the child. Also, it should be kept in mind that the emergency rescue services while on the trek are extremely limited.
  • Is there a chance that my trek will be canceled?
  • There is lttle chance of a total cancellation of a trek unless due to natural disaster. Due to extreme weather circumstances there may be alternative routes taken but a trek will usually be altered rather than totally cancelled.
  • Is the trail still good during the rainy season?
  • we do not recommend this trek in the months of Jan, Feb and March.
  • The trail will have more episodes of stormy weather during the rainy season. It could happen at any time of the year though. Some people actually like to go during the rainy season because there are fewer tourists but we say please be prepared for wet weather and have suitable clothes and equipment. Possibly snow so be prepared for a possible change of route if a pass is deemed unpassable by the guide.
  • What kind of weather can I expect on the trek?
  • Temperatures?
  • During the “rainy season” (Dec – May), you can expect that it will rain pretty much every day. At the same time, it will also be noticeably warmer at night. The day times will get up to about 25 degrees Celsius, the low will be about 1 degrees Celsius.
  • On the other hand, during the “dry season” (June – Nov) the daytimes will seem strikingly like spring time, with bright and sunny skies, but it will be much colder at night. During the daytime you can expect it to be somewhere in the range of 20 to 30 degrees Celsius and at night it will be as low as minus -4 to minus -7 degrees Celsius.
  • It is always best to dress in layers during anytime of year, really. As you hike, put them on when you feel cold or shed them and put it in your day pack when you get hot.
  • How many trekkers and trek crew are in a typical group?
  • For a group of max 19 trekkers our typical trekking staff comprise of: 01 guide, 01 assistant guide, 01 cook, 01 assistant cook, 01 general assistant in charge of setting up and organization of safe campsites and 6-8 horsemen.
  • If the group is 12 or less then just 1 guide, 01 cook, 01 general assistant in charge of setting up and organization of safe campsites and 4-5 horsemen.
  • What is the standard procedure when it comes to tips?
  • Tips for the above mentioned trekking staff are not included in the price of the trek. Tips are optional not mandatory. Generally tips are distributed amongst the trekking staff (except the guide and the assistant guide ) on the 4th day since these trekking staff will not accompany the group to Machupicchu.
  • Tips for the Cook, Assistant cook, Coordinator & Porters
  • On the third night at dinner time someone from the group is usually elected to collect the tips. Please remember to take plenty of small denomination bills in Peruvian Soles. We recommend that the cook should receive about 50% more than the other trekking staff. The money should be paid directly to each individual and not given to the guide, cook or representative of porters.
  • Deciding how much to tip is always a difficult and sometimes uncomfortable decision. SAS Travel pay our trek staff fairly and treat them with respect and try to provide good working conditions. We think that a tip should not be used to subsidize a poor wage but should be a way to show the staff that you have enjoyed the trek and appreciated the services that they have provided. The tip should therefore be optional and not mandatory. However, if you have enjoyed the service, we recommend that each person in the group contributes between 30 and 40 soles ( US$ 10-14 ) to a “pot” which is then distributed amongst the cook, assistant cook, general assistant and horsemen. This should ensure that each person will receive a tip of about US$15 and the cook around US$30. Obviously if you want to tip more please do so.
  • Tips for the Assistant Guide
  • The assistant guide will not accompany the group to Aguas Calientes and Machupicchu. We therefore recommend that you also tip the assistant guide on the 4th day. We suggest that each person in the group tips the assistant guide approx 15 soles. (US$5) Again, tips are optional not mandatory and dependent on the level of service provided. Obviously if you want to pay more please do so.
  • Tips for the Guide
  • The guide will accompany the group throughout the tour including Machupicchu. We recommend that you tip the guide after the tour in Machupicchu at the time of lunch at Hotel Viajeros in Aguas Calientes We suggest that each person in the group tips the main guide between 18 and 28 soles. (US$8-10) Again, tips are optional not mandatory and dependent on the level of service provided. Obviously if you want to pay more please do so.
  • SUMMARY: Like in most American countries, tipping is normal practice. If you have enjoyed the service provided by the trekking team we would recommend bringing between 70 and 85 soles ( US$ 25-30 ) to covers tips for the trekking staff. However if you think that you have received poor service you are under no obligation to pay a tip. The trekking team will soon get the message. Please pay tips in cash and do not pay in kind such as in beers etc. We have tried to be as clear as possible about tipping but we understand that this is a complicated issue when many different cultures and lifestyles come together.
  • The procedure and amounts listed above have been written in conjunction with our guides and trekking staff. We accept that not all of our clients will be in agreement with this information. It is important that you tip the amount that you feel comfortable with. Please try not to let the procedure stress you or cause anyone to feel badly towards other members of the group who wish to pay less than the recommended amount or decide not to pay a tip at all.
  • Will I be able to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu?
  • You first encounter Machu Picchu as the sun rises over the high mountains encircling it. It is already dawn but this impresive moment of Machu Picchu coming out of the shadows of the looming mountains is awesome.
  • Will I be able to climb Huayna Picchu (300 mts above Machu Picchu site)
  • If you are wanting to include an ascent of Huayna Picchu in your visit to Machu Picchu beware that there are new regulations and permits have to be bought in advance. The cost to have a Machu Picchu entrance that includes the permits to climb Huayna Picchu is $10 extra and we must have this request in writing and confirmed at the time of your booking. As this is a new cost and regulation we are still putting this option in the website reservation page so just indicate in comments for the moment.
  • There is a limit of only 400 permits for climbing Huayna Picchu and only 200 people are permitted to enter for each of the 2 sessions scheduled for 7am and 10 am. The guide will organise the tour of Machu Picchu around peoples climb of Huayna Picchu depending on how many in the group have permits. Please note your entrance to Machu Picchu and permit for Huayna Picchu are with your name and passport details so are non transferable and non refundable.
  • Last minute bookings of this trek will possibly miss out on permits in high season so please book and pay in advance.
  • The trail to HuaynaPicchu is safe in good weather, but very steep with use of chains and not recomended for those with vertico. It is about an hour and a half round trip. and there are only 2 times during the day it can be climbed with a sign in and out security system.
  • How long am I able to stay at Machu Picchu?
  • How I will I get down to Aguas Calientes?
  • You will have a guided tour of the ruins that lasts approximately 2-3 hours, after which time you will have 2-3 hours more to spend on your own. You can climb Huayna Picchu or just explore. After the guided portion, your guide will reconfirm the times to return to Aguas Calientes for lunch and / or train
  • What time will I be back in Cusco?
  • Can you explain the train service a little more??
  • Many of our travellers request a later train so they can spend the full day at Machu Picchu, to climb Wayna Picchu or to visit the natural hot baths (for which the town Aguas Calientes is named). We therefore try to reserve a late afternoon train around between - 6 pm for our travellers. Occasionally it is direct to Cusco, but otherwise the service is to Ollantaytambo with a private bus transfer onwards to Cusco. But still, these reservations times are confirmed by Peru Rail often only 9 days in advance during high season and holidays. When demand exceeds availability, we will always try to obtain tickets for an earlier service rather than one late at night for a more comfortable arrival to Cusco but this is sometimes difficult.
  • C. BOOKING & RESERVATIONS.-
  • What are the benefits of doing a private trek?
  • One of the main reasons why the private option is sought after is for families or groups of friends or for trekkers who want more individual time with the guide and flexiblity in the programme. You can choose any date that you want.
  • In addition to the convenience and flexibility in booking, the private option provides a more personal trip experience for your group. We will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. The guide will focus all of his energy and attention on your group. You can also be more specific about the foods that you would like to be served during the trek. It is a truly wonderful experience to go on such an amazing journey with only your friends and loved ones. Ask a SAS Rep how you can arrange your own private tour.
  • What is an ISIC card? How can I use it to get a discount?
  • ISIC stands for “International Student Identity Card” and is the internationally accepted form of student identification. The INC accepts ISIC for discounts.
  • The discount that is offered isn’t a SAS Travel discount, but is actually offered by the INC and SAS Travel passes the discount on to you. You must scan your ISIC card to you at the time of your booking and carry your ISIC card on the trek.
  • Am I able to change dates after the initial reservation?
  • If you do not leave the group without a minumum you can change your date but there must be a group for the date which you want to move to.
  • What if do not have my passport right now?
  • You can book and then send us your passport details later for this trek as it is only required for train tickets and Machu Picchu entrances.
  • ++Can I pay for the entire tour up front?**
  • Usually we only charge the deposit of your Salkantay Trail to the card (done without commission fee) to confirm your booking. This deposit and the details completed on your booking form are used as a guarantee for the balance and other tours. The balance is paid on your arrival to Cusco in cash. If you choose to pay with credit card you need to pay 5% commission. With Traveller’s Cheques there is a 3% commission.
  • The prices of the tours are for cash payment. You can withdraw US $ out of the ATMs, which there are plenty in Cusco.
  • If you like, some people prefer to pay the full balance by Western Union or Bank just before starting their travels to avoid carrying cash or spending time finalizing things when they arrive so let us know if you would prefer this. If you want to pay the full tour by credit card please add on the 5% fee.
  • ALTITUDE or MOUNTAIN SICKNESS, SOROCHE
  • Altitude sickness is serious and can ruin your trip. The biggest mistake you can make is to fly directly to Cuzco (3326m/10,910ft) and expect to hike the next day. Give yourself a few days to adjust to the altitude first.
  • Altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), altitude illness, hypobaropathy, or Soroche, is a pathological effect of high altitude on humans, caused by acute exposure to low partial pressure of oxigen at high altitude. It commonly occurs above 2,400 metres (approximately 8,000 feet). Acute mountain sickness can progress to high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high altitude cerebral edema (HACE).The causes of altitude sickness are not fully understood. The percentage of oxygen in air remains essentially constant with altitude at 21% up until 70,000 feet (21,330 m), but the air pressure (and therefore the number of oxygen molecules) drops as altitude increases — consequently, the available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases above 10,000 feet (3,050m). Altitude sickness usually does not affect persons traveling in aircraft because the cabin altitude in modern passenger aircraft is kept to 8,000 feet (2,440 m) or lower. A superficially related condition is chronic mountain sickness, also known as Monge's disease, occurring only after prolonged exposure to high altitude. An unrelated condition, often confused with altitude sickness, is dehydration, due to the higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at higher altitudes.
  • Those who ascend rapidly to altitudes greater than 2500m (8100 ft)
  • may develop altitude sickness. In Peru, this includes Cusco ( 3326m)
  • Machupicchu (2400m) and Lake Titicaca (3820m). Being physically fit offers no protection. Those who have experienced altitude sickness in the past are prone to future episodes. The risk increases with faster ascents, higher altitudes and greater exertion.
  • Symptoms may include headaches,nausea,vomiting,dizziness,malaise, imsomnia and loss of appetite. Severe cases may be complicated by fluids in the lungs (high-altitude pulmonary edema) or swelling of the brain (high-altitude cerebral edema) If symptoms are more than mild or persist for more than 24 hours (far less at high altitudes), descend immediately by at least 500 meters and see a doctor.
  • To help prevent altitude sickness, the best measure is to spend two nights or more at each rise of 1000m. Alternatively, take 125mg or 250mg of acetozolamide (Diamox) twice or three times daily starting 24 hours before ascent and continuing for 48 hours after arrival at altitude. Possible side effects include increased urinary volume, numbness,
  • tingling,nausea,drowsiness, myopia and temporary impotence.
  • Acetazolamide should not be given to pregnant women or anyone with a history of sulfa allergy. For those who cannot tolerate acetazolamide, the next best option is 4mg of dexamethasone taken four times daily.
  • Unlike acetazolamide, dexamethasone must be tapered gradually upon arrival at altitude, since there is a risk that altitude sickness will occur as the dosage is reduced.
  • Dexamethasone is a steroid, so it should not be given to diabetics or anyone for whom taking sterorids is not adviced. A natural alternative is gingko, which some people find quite helpful.
  • When traveling to high altitudes, it´s also important to evoid overexertion, eat ligh meals and abstain from alcohol.
  • Altitude sickness should be taken seriously, it can be life threatening when severe.

  • You will receive an email shortly after, containing your ´Reservation Code` or ´Purchase Number` which you will need for step 3.
  • Step 3.- CONFIRMATION: To secure your reservations you need to pay a non-refundable deposit of US$150.00 pp with VISA or Master Card: ONLINE PAYMENT You only need to use one ´Reservation Code` to pay for all the party members. Or you can use each code to pay individually.

  • SENDING A BOOKING FORMAT.- Send us a completed Booking Form by e-mail with all your personal and credit card details. The booking form can be found on our website or you can request it at: office@sastravelperu.com - This method is convenient for group bookings.
  • CONFIRMATION.- Once your deposit is received, your trek is confirmed and we will send a confirmation including the price itinerary and pre-departure information. (Your reservation confirmation will normally be sent within 1 or 2 days).
  • FINAL PAYMENT.- Please pay the final balance in cash (US$) on arrival to Cusco, a minimum of 2 days before your tour. We recommend arriving to Cusco 2-3 days before treks in order to acclimatize.

  • 1.- You must advise SAS Travel of any medical problems or allergies. You need to be in good physical health and if your health is questionable, then you should consult a doctor. If you are over the age of 65, then you will need to present us with a current medical certificate as Lares trek goes to 4600 mtrs.
  • 2.- You must advise your guide if you wish to leave the group or the camping area for independent walks or sightseeing. If you are experiencing any problems with the service of the guide or tour please advise the guide in that moment so he can resolve any problems as soon as possible.
  • 3.- You must pay for your tour in full by 12:00 noon, 2 days before your departure.
  • Payment of your balance in the Cusco SAS office is requested in cash. US $ is easier but if you choose to pay in soles the rate charged is generally 3.0 soles = US$1 You can withdraw US$ or soles from the many ATM machines. Generally more economic on debit cards.
  • If a final payment is not made by 12 noon the day before any tour or service such as the Inca trail, the total balance will be charged to the credit card + the 5% commission.
  • 4.- The student US$20 discount for use of student cards is regulated by the park itself, not SAS travel. You must scan the ISIC card to us at the time of booking and carry the valid ISIC card on the trail to Machu Picchu with you or your entrance could be forfeited by the control.
  • 5.- Unless you hire an extra porter / horse you need to carry your back pack and sleeping bag .
  • If you have no experience in high altitude trekking please hire an extra porter. This is a serious requirement.
  • 6.- Change of dates is only possible if the group is still left with more than a minimum and the train tickets have not been finalised. US$ 25 is charged.
  • Change of dates when train tickets have been finalised incurs a further fee as Peru rail also charges for changes of dates. This administration charge of $20 per ticket in this case is incurred. At times a change of date may only be possible in an upgrade to a higher standard carriage and so the difference in price would need to be paid additionally. Equally if Machu Picchu entrance has already been purchased it is not transferable or refundable so a further entrance needs to be purchased. This is $46 but generally only purchased 10 days before tour.
  • CANCELATIONS :

Helicopter air lifts and medical assistance are paid at the expense of the passenger. If you fail to complete the tour due to illness we will assist you to meet with your group at Machupicchu to recommence your tour at that point. There will be no refund from the original payment, however we will prepare a document to certify illness which can be used to present to your travel insurance company.
  • 10.- SAS Travel will take all reasonable care in providing service to our clients to avoid accident, illness, loss of personal property and will only employ suitably qualified staff. We accept responsibility for the actions of our own employees. SAS Travel cannot however be responsible for any action or event that was unforeseeable or unavoidable. We also cannot be responsible for improper acts by clients or other third party. You are totally responsable for your own personal property and rented equipment.
  • 11.- SAS Travel does not take responsibility for additional costs due to unfavorable weather conditions, natural catastrophe, strikes, accidents, illness, injury, loss of personal items, etc. It is the clients responsibility to carry insurance to cover these types of events. We reserve the right to modify or cancel the program due to any of the unforeseen conditions listed above.
  • 12.- Lares trek is recommended in dry season. Unexpected rain can cause snow falls causing difficult trekking conditions and possibly closure of the pass. In the case of snow falls SAS can not be held accountable for the need to take an alternative route. You would also need good quality trekking boots and equipment to protect you against snow related conditions, cold and glare. In extreme cases when “ Lares trail to Machupicchu” is declared closed for safety reasons SAS travel can replace your trek with an alternative trek such as 4 day Choquequirao trek and your booking deposit money will be used for this or if you prefer an alternative tour such as 4 day lake Titicaca package or Jungle trip etc.to give you some of the many options.
  • 13.- When paying the balance in Cusco, there will be a * 3% comission if you choose to use travellers cheques and a 5% comission for use of credit card.
