DESCRIPTION:
Day 1 Meet at our departure point: Plaza Regocijo or Cusipata at 05:45 to 06.00 am to board the bus. Make sure you carry your original passport and ISIC student card (if applicable) Journey to km 82 takes approx 3 hrs with beautiful views of the Sacred Valley, the Urubamba river, Andean towns and Ollantaytambo Inca town. We enjoy a breakfast snack along the way. Walking times are always approximate depending on weather conditions, group ability and a thousand other possibilities but you`ll walk about 2-3 hrs before lunch. After lunch, we walk on just pass the village of Wayllabamba for our first camping at Ayapata (3,300masl). This first days walking passes through valley starting from 2,380 mtrs with a small climb, rewarded with superb views of Mount Veronica, to a platform overlooking the Incan site of Llaqtapata approx 12km walking 6 -7 hours.
Day 2 You can hire a porter from the village of Wayllabamba to carry your pack to the top of the pass for approximately 60 soles. This is the most difficult day as you walk from about 3000 mtrs to 4,200 m, (Dead womans pass). You can walk at your own pace, stop to get your breath whenever you like. You ll find your energy returns once you continue down to the valley of Pacaymayo and beyond to Cochapata campsite 3400 masl. This is the coldest night. +2/+4 degrees celcius (December) -3/-5 degrees celcius (June). Approx 16km walking 7- 8 hours
Day 3 Exceptionally beautiful because of the ruins, the Aobamba valley and incredible paved trail (and more importantly for your lungs, there is a lot more down than up!!!). There are about 2000 stairs descending from Phuyupatamarca to Wiñaywayna, so if you have not had knee problems in the past, you probably will after this! If you have had knee injuries; an extra porter is recommended so that you are not carrying extra weight which will overstress your joints. Guided tours of all the ruins and camping generally at Wiñaywayna (2,700 masl) * Take extra care of your personal belongings in this campsite as most of the tours camp near here. As usual always keep your daypack with valuables with you. Apart from streams the only hot shower on the Inca trail is on this third night at Wiñaywayna.. There is a hostal near the campsite with an 8 min, hot shower for 5 soles and a bar and restaurant where you can also purchase bottled water. Approx 10km walking 5- 6 hours
Day 4 Get up extremely early to arrive at Inti Punku, "the gate of the sun" and view of first sun illuminating Machu Picchu. It is still 20 mins walk down from here and the famous view is from the terraces at the end of the trail. Take your photos now before the 10:30 crowds arrive. Your tour of Machu Picchu should finish between 10:30 and 11:00am and you have free time to climb Wayna Picchu (min 90 mins), or just collapse under the tree in the plaza of Machu Picchu. approx 5km walking 1.5- 2 hours *** Special buffet lunch included after you visit Machu Picchu in the town of Aguas Calientes in our welcoming "Hostal Viajeros" , where you can have a hot shower, store your backpack whilst you go to the hot springs or shop around the village
NOTE: Climbing to the Huayna Picchu.- Permits are required and limited. Only the first people arriving in Machupicchu can get the passes so please let your guides know at the briefing if this is a particular interest of yours and remind them on the 3rd night so as to ensure best possibility.
If no permits are available, climbing to the Machupicchu Mountain.or Hiking to the Inca Bridge are possible options
Important : Machupicchu site is officially open from 06:00 am to 17:30 pm
Our two first campsites are the most isolated and tranquil campsites, they are Ayapata Camp and Chaquicocha Camp. Third Camping in Wiñaywayna.- 98% of our groups achieve this 2 hours near to Machupicchu Campsite. Late bookings are often with Phuyupatamarca camp 4-5 hrs from Machupicchu so we recommend to book your Inca Trail Trek early.

OTHER INFORMATION :
PORTERS :
GROUP PORTERS: are incharge of carrying all the expedition/camping gear, gas bottles, gas stoves, food items, client tents, dinning tent, cooking tent, cooking equipment, stools/ tables, crockery cutlery etc
Unless you hire an “EXTRA” PORTER you need to carry your back pack, sleeping bag and the mattress. You need to indicate this at the time of booking as porters who carry for the full 4 days require permits in advance in the same manner as trekkers.
PORTERS to carry up to 9 Kg = $60 up to 18 Kg = $120) for the full duration of the tour from Cusco to Aguas Calientes. Regarding porters who carry personal items. You will need to carry with you a daypack with your Camera, water bottle, snacks, a fleece or something warm and a poncho in case of rain (unlikely in Dry season but as a precaution) and anything you will need before lunch as porters do not walk alongside you. Your bag will be waiting for you in your tent at campsites. Best to put everything up to 18 Kgs in one backpack for the porter so that you don't have 2 large backpacks in your tent. We can provide you with a big rice sack that is not heavy but also not water proof so use plastic bags around your gear. The porters have large ponchos to cover them and the bag.
PLEASE NOTE.- there are fines if you give an excess of 9 Kgs or 18 Kgs so try to underpack rather than overpack or pay for an extra 9 Kgs.
TIPPING .- The recommended amount to cover this tradition is approx US $25 -$30. Groups are generally accompanied by 19-22 staff for a maximum 16 trekker group. As for all American countries, tipping is common practice and is a part of the experience but not obligatory. Generally groups prepare a collective tip which is shared out between the trekking crew, porters and cooks on the 3rd night. It is customary to thank the guides with a voluntary tip after the Tour in Machupicchu on the fourth day in Aguas Calientes.
ALTITUDE SICKNESS:
Travel Insurance is strongly recommended for all travel in third world countries:
For people over 65 / or questioning their ability to trek the altitude the Short 2 Day Inca Trail is recommended.
It is possible you will feel the effects of altitude upon arriving in Cusco (3,400 m or 11,350 feet). Remember that arriving from a lower elevation (like Lima) to the Andes, the % of oxygen is less. You will feel tired and weak before adjusting to it. It is best to arrive in Cusco at least two days before setting out on the trail. Don’t drink alcohol, smoke or take sedatives. Drink lots of water and coca tea, have a good night’s sleep, and eat moderate, light meals high in carbohydrates.
Very Important! We encourage you to allow for at least 3 days in Cusco before your trek; apart from there being so much to see and do (see the other activities we offer), it is possible that your arrival could be delayed due to transport strikes or cancellation of flights due to poor weather, etc. Altitude affects everyone differently and you may need more time to acclimatize. Because there is no way to change your permit to another date you could miss out on your Inca trail experience altogether. So please keep this in mind when choosing the date of your trek and making your travel plans!
Water: We suggest you take a 2 litre bottle of water on the first day and then you can refill this throughout the entire trek. We boil water each night and you can fill your water bottle after breakfast each morning. We suggest you take water purification tablets or filters for water you take directly from streams or waterfalls. You can buy water throughout the first day, for the first few hours of Day 2 and from the afternoon of Day 3 at the Hostal in Wiñaywayna.
Temperatures during the day: If you are walking in the sun it is very hot and feels like 26 degrees Celsius, but when you walk through the forest or in the shadow of a mountain it can feel like 14 degrees almost immediately. On the second night, due to the higher elevation, the temperature is cold, ranging from 0 to -5 degrees Celsius! The third night at 2700 m, “high jungle,” is warmer.
The best way to deal with the changes in temperatures is to try and keep your body temperature as regular as possible by wearing layers: put on that extra layer before you get cold and take off a layer if you start to feel warm, before you perspire which will leave you with a chill if it gets cold again. The weather from December through to early March is the wettest on the trail.
Some days it may be drizzly all day or you may have a burst of rain and clear skies for the rest of the day, or it could be wet off and on all day. You need good rain gear for walking as well as something to protect your pack. We have dining tents so you are protected from the elements during meals.
Hot Showers along the Trail: There is a basic timed electric shower at the 3rd night camping in Wiñaywayna for 10 Soles but please do not expect too much!!! Along the trail a little hot water will be offered to you every morning and before meals for a quick wash. Worth taking antibacterial gel but hand washing and drying is imperative whenever possible to avoid transfer of viruses.
Toilets : In each of the Campsites there are basic toilets constructed and maintained by the Inka Trail Park control. Bring your own toilet paper.
Garbage : There are many bins along the trail. At lunch time and at campsites our porters will always clean the area. Please keep this historical sanctuary clean and cooperate so that we leave no trace! Take all trash with you and remind others not to litter!
Unexpected : Don’t be surprised to find Gatorade, Coca Cola, Cuzqueña Beer and even Snickers chocolate bars at 4,200 meters along the trail.
What happens if I get exhausted or weak in the middle of the trek? : SAS has a low record of hikers that decide to turn back. Our trekking staff will accompany you back if necessary, but they are prepared to walk at your pace, carry your pack and even you if necessary, for you to reach the top.
Important lessons learnt by some!!
- Don’t get drunk in Cusco before you start the trek!
- Don’t get drunk the 3rd night before the walk to sunrise at Machupicchu!
- Don’t take that Lonely Planet guidebook on the trail—you’ll be too exhausted to read it.
- Leave any unnecessary items with our secure luggage area in Cusco.
- Do learn some Quechua words and practice it with your porters!
